CIM Primer – Hot of the presses with Xtensible Success Stories
The 8th edition of the CIM Primer is available! The Common Information Model Primer explains the basics of the Common Information Model (CIM) for readers with limited background in utility power system models and standards. The CIM is a set of open standards for representing power system components originally developed by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in North America and is now a series of standards under the IEC. The goal of the IEC CIM is for utilities to use an agnostic data model —one that is not tied to a specific technology or vendor— to ensure interoperability with the smart grid. It is a comprehensive industry model with well-defined data and associations for:
- Transmission (IEC CIM 61970)
- Distribution (IEC CIM 61968)
- Market Communications (IEC CIM 62325)
It covers subject areas such as “Asset”, “Metering”, “Customer”, “Environment” and several others. The CIM can be used as Reference Data as you start building your Enterprise Semantic Model for your utility.
In this new edition of the CIM Primer the focus is change management for when an organization begins to organize around an industry standard data model.
The success stories Xtensible provided originally to EPRI for the first edition of the CIM Primer have been updated and are more relevant than ever. They include insights with utilities such as SCE, PSEG-LI, Consumers Energy, Idaho Power Company and more.
